CPAP Equipment and Supplies in Clackamas, OR
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and refers to a class of medical devices that provide just what the name says; continuous air while you sleep. A CPAP device is simply a small air pump that forces air through the passages or blows the airways open during sleep through a face mask that fits over a patient’s nose and mouth. The CPAP is used at night during normal sleep. There are several different types of CPAP machines available like the AUTO-PAP that can actually sense an apnea or snoring event and increase pressure until the event is corrected. Newer versions of CPAPs are portable and quiet. New masks are also available that fit to the nose and don’t require the use of straps, creating a more comfortable sleep environment.
Sleep apnea is the most common disorder addressed with use of CPAP equipment and is the most effective nonsurgical treatment for that disorder. Whereas before sleep apnea caused interruption of natural breathing during sleep, the CPAP machine uses compressed air to keep air passages open so that breathing continues normally. Machines are set to appropriate pressure levels as determined during a sleep study. With use of CPAP, people who have been affected for much of their life find themselves feeling much more rested, refreshed, and with an enhance mood. While used mainly to treat patients with sleep apnea, CPAP equipment may also be used with patients in hospitals transitioning from breathing tubes to regular breathing. Also, persons suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder or another breathing disorder may use a CPAP at night.
